What is an AppImage, and is it safe?
AppImages are portable Linux apps in a single file. Here's how they work and how to use them safely.
By the Appimo team ·
An AppImage is a single file that contains an app and its dependencies, so it runs on almost any Linux distribution without installation. It's the Linux equivalent of a portable app.
Why people like them
- No installation and no admin rights — download, make executable, run.
- Doesn't touch the rest of your system; delete the file to remove the app.
- Great for trying software, or carrying apps on a USB stick.
Staying safe
Because an AppImage runs with your user's privileges, only run ones from projects you trust — which is why every Download button here goes to the project's official release page, never a re-upload. If a project publishes a checksum, verify it after downloading.
Sandboxing
AppImages aren't sandboxed by default. If you want confinement, run one with a tool like Firejail, or use the Flatpak or Snap version of the app instead.
