How to run an AppImage on Linux

An AppImage is one file that runs on any Linux distribution — no installation. Here's how to download, make it executable and run it.

By the Appimo team ·

An AppImage packages an app and everything it needs into a single file. You download it, make it executable, and run it — there's nothing to install, and removing the app is just deleting the file. Every Download button here opens the project's official release page.

1. Download the file

On the project's release page, download the file ending in .AppImage. If there are several, pick the one for your CPU (x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for ARM).

2. Make it executable

In your file manager: right-click the file › Properties › Permissions › tick "Allow executing file as program". Or in a terminal:

chmod +x ~/Downloads/App-x86_64.AppImage

3. Run it

Double-click the file, or run it from the terminal:

~/Downloads/App-x86_64.AppImage

Make it feel installed (optional)

Install the small "AppImageLauncher" tool and it will offer to add any AppImage you open to your applications menu and keep it tidy. To update an AppImage, download the newer file from the same project and replace the old one.
